Patient Specific Instrumentation

Patient Specific Knee replacementPatient specific instrumentation is a technique for doing total knee replacement. It involves getting special instruments 3D printed for the individual patient with the aim of getting the best possible positioning of the prosthetic implant.

An MRI or CT scan of the knee are used to make a 3D computer model of the knee. This model is then used to plan the positioning of the prosthesis very accurately.

Once the plan has been made custom instruments are made for the individual patient to be used at the time of surgery to prepare the bone for the insertion of the prosthesis.

Dr MacKenzie offers patient specific instrumentation for total knee replacements at Lingard Hospital.
